Foundational Math

Foundational Math
Our Foundational Math program is built for learners who "hate math" mostly because it has never truly made sense. We focus on understanding, not just memorizing, using the Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) approach so students can see, model, and then confidently solve problems on paper.

In the concrete phase, we use virtual manipulatives and, when possible, simple household items to model addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and more. Then we shift to drawings, number lines, and visual models that help students bridge from hands-on work to traditional notation. Finally, we connect these experiences to abstract symbols and equations, so procedures are grounded in meaning.

Key skill areas include:
- Number sense: understanding place value, comparing quantities, and recognizing patterns.
- Flexible strategies for basic facts so students are not stuck counting on fingers forever.
- Word problem routines that teach students how to identify what the problem is asking, choose an operation, and explain their reasoning.
- Visual models for fractions, decimals, and multi-step operations.

All instruction occurs in live, online sessions with an experienced Intervention Specialist who understands how attention, processing, or anxiety can affect math learning. We move at the student's pace, offering just enough challenge to build confidence without overload.

Families also receive suggestions for short, low-stress practice activities that can fit into daily life, such as quick number games or real-world problem-solving during errands. These moments add up, reinforcing what happens in sessions.

This program is ideal for elementary and middle grade learners who have gaps in understanding, as well as older students who need to rebuild the basics. Over time, you can expect fewer tears during homework, stronger test performance, and a noticeable shift from "I'm just bad at math" to "I actually get this now."
